CAA Winter Class Offerings: Jan. - Apr. 2008

Is your child a budding artist? Is she a natural for the stage? Do you dream of learning new crafts? Honing those artistic skills? The CAA offers a variety of art and craft courses for children, teens and adults. From drawing to quilt making to dramatic performance, all classes are hands-on and fun!

We offer various sessions this spring, running over two sessions from September to December. Class descriptions are shown below. To register, click the check boxes next to the classes of interest, and hit the "Register" button at the bottom.

Unless otherwise mentioned, classes meet at the CAA Building at 98 Hayden Rowe St.

Kid's Classes

Art Discovery

Instructor: Nancy Barton. In this popular drop-off class, your child will experience the excitement of discovering their creativity through the use of line, shape, texture, color and pattern. Fine and gross motor skills will be exercised through instruction in drawing and painting. All materials included.

Maximum Class size 10 children

*Children who take both Art Discovery PM and Music and Movement will be supervised by Middle School or High School student Interns. The Interns will make sure the children transition from one class to the other and read the children a story.

Stamp A Stack of Valentines

4th grade to adult

Instructor: Sara McKenzie A fun mother and daughter class! You will make 12 Valentines, 4 each of three different designs. Follow the style offered by the instructor, or create your own.
Maximum Class size 10 people. Adults welcome!

Mixed Media Workshop for Kids

Instructor: Becky Shander. In this drop in class students will learn a different technique and make a different project each class. Students will make altered journals, art dolls, jewelry, ornaments, Artist Trading Cards, to name a few. Students can attend one or all of the classes. All materials included.

The CAA is the place to get creative on a Sunday afternoon. Come do the planned project or use our many resources to work on your own unique project!

  Sunday, 1/27 Storybook Art - Eric Carle
Using collage, paint, crayons and imagination, students will create their very own unique Eric Carle style creature. We will also read a Eric Carle story or two.

  Sunday, 2/3 Chinese New Year
Ring in the Chinese New Year with crafts, stories, fortune cookies and fun!.

  Sunday, 3/2 Marvelous Mobiles
Students will create a work of hanging art using many varied mediums. This twirling, sparkling work of art will make your room shine!

  Sunday, 3/9 I Spy
Using charms, figures and trinkets kids will create their very own I Spy wreath or shadowbox.

Portrait Sculpture Workshop

Tuesdays 1/22, 2/5, 2/12 6:30 - 9:30PM

Instructor: Michael Alfano Internationally known sculptor Michael Alfano will instruct you on how to sculpt a portrait in clay, working from a live model. You will build the armature, bulk out the head shape and move on to the fine details of the face and expressions. Model clay/tools are provided – you take the sculpture home after the last session. Jewelry Making Fundamentals

Instructor: Jennifer Blasko of JLynn Designs is offering a series of jewelry-making classes that will give you an introduction to various techniques in jewelry design.   Thursday, Jan 31 - BASIC INTRODUCTION TO BEADING
Students will be introduced to the basics of jewelry design and finishing techniques. Students will design and complete at least one necklace during class.
Materials Needed: Two or three 16” strands of beads of complementary colors and vary in shape and size.

  Thursday, Feb 14 - EARRINGS
Learn to create and design a series of from a simple dangle to chandelier.
Materials: Minimum of 5 pairs of ear wires/fishhooks and 10 headpins.

  Thursday, February 28 - INTRODUCTION TO THE PEYOTE STITCH
Get an introduction to the peyote stitch using seed beads to create rings.
Materials: Two tubes of size 11 seed beads. Choose two complementary colors of your choice.

  Thursday, March 6 - WIRE WRAPPING PENDANTS
Learn to take found objects like shells, sea glass or semi-precious stones and wire wrap them into pendants for jewelry ideas.
Materials: Spool of 20 gauge craft wire, preferably silver or gold colored. Teacher will provide a variety of choices but bring any found objects such as sea glass, rocks, or large semiprecious beads that are of interest to you.

  Thursday, March 13 - CREATING BEADED CHAIN JEWELRY
Design a beaded chain necklace or bracelet using a loop wrapping technique.
Materials: Spool of 22 gauge silver or gold craft wire. Two or three 16” strands of beads of complementary colors that are of interest to you.

Friday Nights at the CAA

Relax for a few hours with friends and learn a new craft. Perfect for groups of friends or Mother -daughter outing. All classes are 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
All materials are included in the price of the class

Let Go of Who You Aren't

Instructor: Julie Nardone Our greatest fear is to reveal ourselves, to be who we really are, to step out from behind the curtain. “Let Go of Who You Aren’t” will help you start or continue your journey to the real you. If you’d like to Say Yes! to your unique, brilliant life, please consider joining a small group of women for a two-hour workshop. We’ll share, care and dare!

Fun with Clay

Fee $20
FRI, Feb.29, 7:00-9:00PM

Instructor: Michael Alfano Using the exciting new medium of polymer clay (Sculpy) we will make all sorts of clay creations: bright millefiori jewelry or claymation characters or miniature fine art sculpture or whatever you are interested in. Great fun for the whole family! Bake them that night and bring home a permanent sculpture. Clay and tools provided.

Scrapbook in a Box

Fee $20
FRI, Mar.7, 7:00-9:00PM

Instructor: Sara McKenzie Using 5 sheets of cardstock, you will create and decorate an "explosion box". This style of box allows the sides to fall down when the lid is removed. We will nestle four boxes inside of each other, such that each box wall becomes a "page" of your scrapbook. You can add photos, journaling, or other paper mementos. Bring these along, or add them later
